As a footballer he was a legend and captain of Real Madrid, participating in over 500 games, having won six Championships, two Spanish Cups, as well as two consecutive UEFA Cups, among others. From 1985 to 1994 he participated in 31 games in the Spanish first League. He represented the Spanish national team 67 times and participated in two World Cups (1986–1990) and one European Cup (1988). In the 1990 tournament, he even scored a hat trick against South Korea. In February 2013 he took over as football manager of Olympiacos and for a “golden” two-year period, during which he recorded 65 victories, 11 draws and 15 defeats in 91 games, he led the “red-and-whites” to two championships (2012–2013, 2013–2014) and one cup (2012–2013), as well as some of their greatest victories in Europe against opponents such as Atlético Madrid (3–2), Juventus (1–0), Benfica (1–0) and Anderlecht (0–3).
